La Quercia is a wonderful villa surrounded by the dramatic scenery of the Val d’Orcia — the undulating hills made famous by the filming of “The English Patient.” The villa has been featured in design magazines and has been on the cover of House & Garden!
The location is conveniently central. S. Quirico, Pienza, and Montelpulciano are just 15-20 minutes drive. Florence is 1.5 hrs; Siena, Orvieto and Arezzo are less than an hour; and Montalcino is just 30 minutes. Leave your car in Chiusi (25 minutes) and take a high-speed Eurostar train to Florence or Rome in a little over an hour. The closest village, Contignano, is just 5 minutes away, with groceries, butcher, bakery, gas station and “pecorino” cheese factory. And there are four spas within 30 minutes of the villa. This carefully restored 16th century house is surrounded by wheat fields, clay hills and cypress trees. The view includes a striking 11th century tower, with Pienza and Montalcino in the distance. Furnishings throughout the house were selected and in many cases designed by the owner’s wife, a celebrated Italian designer who owns a home furnishings shop in Rome, where you can purchase many of the pieces you see throughout the house. Outside is a spacious dining patio with seating for 20, with a built-in BBQ and ancient brick oven for cooking pizza or roasting meats, leading to a vegetable garden with seasonal vegetables. A shaded pergola opens to the heated swimming pool (14 x 6 meters) and faces a sunset view. A separate hot tub (2 x 2 m) can accommodate 12. The large double living room is lined with custom-made bookshelves, with a stone fireplace at one end and doors opening onto the terrace and pergola. A separate dining room seats 20 and opens onto the garden. The traditional country kitchen is equipped with 10 gas burners, 2 ovens, microwave, and a large stone counter top and sink. An adjacent pantry is outfitted with a dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, and ice maker. There is a house laundry, with heavy duty appliances, as well as a guests’ laundry, with washing machine and tumble dryer. Amenities include satellite TV, VCR, DVD and stereo. |
