		Villa dei Leoni is an elegant 18th-century villa set in a hilly region of olive groves and vineyards six kilometers north of Lucca. The grounds are peaceful and private, and although the structure of the original villa has been respected, the interior has been renovated, with spacious, comfortable light-filled rooms. Furnishings are high quality and the rose-colored rooms exude warmth and welcome, creating an atmosphere of gracious Lucchesi living. Florence is an hour away by train or car. The chic beaches of Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi are 20 km (16 miles) away; the Cinqueterre, with its fabulous views and beloved walks and boat trips, is one hour north up the coast. Tennis courts are nearby (3 km). Visit the white marble quarries of Carrara, where Michelangelo obtained his pure-white marble. To the north is the Garfagnana, with rushing streams, waterfalls and ancient stone villages. Pisa airport is 20 km (12 mi.), Florence airport is 70 km (42 mi.), Rome airport is 382 km (229 mi.) and Milan's Malpensa airport is 326 km (196 mi.) or Milan's Linate airport is 276km (166 mi.). Enter the beautiful grounds through an impressive gate. There are 3000 squar. meters of private gardens with mature trees, a lily pond and a 10 x 5 meter swimming pool, located on a lower terraced level of the garden. It is acutally above the ground, but because of its position below the garden and because has been built in with a wooden deck, it is similar to an in-ground pool and is not at all objectionable. (The commune of Lucca is slow to give permission for swimming pool construction in historic villas.) Ground floor: Frescoed reception room 2 large sitting rooms, one with a fireplace Library with fireplace Dining room Fabulous kitchen with beamed ceiling, cotto floors, fireplace, dishwasher and marble table. (The owner teaches cooking classes in this kitchen, so cooking here is a real pleasure.) Utility room with washer and dryer. Second floor: 5 bedroom suites with matrimoniale beds (roughly equivalent to queen or king-sized), en suite bathrooms 1 bedroom suite with twin beds, en suite bathroom Eash bedroom is charmingly decorated, with its own large, modern, beautifully-tiled bathroom. Five bathrooms have showers and one has a bathtub. Amenities: portable air-conditioner and ceiling fan in each bedroom, satellite TV, wireless high-speed Internet access. It is possible to arrange traditional Italian cooking classes taught by the owner (lady) of the villa, a masterful cook. Afterward, you will be invited to sit down to dine with her and her English-speaking husband. She will give you a copy of the recipes translated into English to take home — Mousse di ricotta alla piemontese, Zuppa di ceci e polpo, Torta di riso e cipolle. If she is not available, we can arrange another cook. Please note that the owners, who live on the property when it is not rented, have a dog; although the dog will not be there when guests are in the villa, we do not recommend Villa dei Leoni for guests who are allergic to dogs. 2009 Prices
