Villa Monet, located directly on the shore of Lake Maggiore,
lies halfway between Stresa, Italy, and Locarno, Switzerland. This beautiful coast
between Verbania and Cannero, famous for its subtropical vegetation, faces south
and is protected from cold winds by the mountains. Lemon, orange and olive trees,
gardenias, azaleas, mimosa, magnolias and palms all flourish in this gentle climate.
The village of Cannero stands at the mouth of the River Cannero and is interlaced
with cobbled streets and quaint alleyways leading to piazzas and gardens. There
is a regular ferry service from the village to Laveno, a small town not far from
Varese and Milan. From here, it is possible to explore the surrounding area, including
Milan (120 km or 72 miles), and also to hike in the Alps and enjoy water sports
on the lake. Lake Maggiore is nestled between alpine mountains that plunge steeply
down to the lake providing unforgettable views to those lucky enough to live along
the shore.
Once the home of Gaetano Donizetti, the famous
operatic composer of the first half of the 1800's, this charming villa could be
described architecturally as a lakeshore chalet. It has direct access to a private
swimming beach. From the parking area, at street level above the villa, there
is a steeply sloping garden footpath, bordered by giant bamboo, azalea and rhododendron
bushes, of about 150 meters (with some small steps) to reach the villa. Therefore,
this property is not recommended for anyone with walking problems. A
beautiful terrace for dining overlooks the lake, and there are two other outdoor
dining areas, one in the shade and one in the sun. A double barbecue is located
just outside the kitchen. The outdoor areas provide wonderful space for dining
al fresco.
The villa has four floors and all rooms overlook
the lake. On the ground floor is a living room with fireplace and TV (no satellite),
a sitting room, a dining room with table that can seat up to eight people, and a large, well-equipped family kitchen. The kitchen
has a freezer, a refrigerator, a dishwasher and bright country-style ceramic dishes.
Each room has furniture, ornaments and paintings that nicely complement the era
in which the house was built. There is a bathroom on the ground floor with a sink
and a shower and a WC. On the next floor there are 2 bedrooms, one with twin beds
and one with a double bed. Each bedroom is equipped with a sink. On the next floor
there are a bedroom with twin beds that can be made up as one or made up separately,
a queen-sized bedroom, and two bathrooms, one with shower and WC and one with
small tub and hand held shower, bidet and WC. On the top floor, the mansarda,
there is a large bedroom with queen-sized bed and sitting area with a skylight
and spectacular view of the lake. On this floor there also is a laundry room with
a washing machine and drying rack. All bedrooms are provided with fans for the warmer weather.
