This charming apartment in the heart of the old town of Villefrance-sur-Mer has been recently remodeled and furnished to offer a high level of comfort and convenience. The old town of Villefranche rises from the waterfront up the hillside to a village square and small crossroads at the top of the old village. Le Balcon is located two thirds of the way up the hill and is a bit closer to the square than to the waterfront; but the waterfront is just 70 steps downhill along a lovely walking street. The square is very convenient and is a popular gathering spot for locals. Here you will find a wonderful little bar/café, one of the best bakeries in town, an excellent butcher, three grocers, a great pizzeria, a pharmacy, and a lovely olive tree surrounded by benches where local folk gather to chat. You will feel part of a real neighborhood here, where the village life unfolds. You enter the apartment on street level, but it is actually a floor above the street because it is built on a hillside. As soon as you enter, you feel the spaciousness of the room and the historic feeling of this 500-year-old building. Ceilings are twelve feet high, with original wooden beams. Light streams in through the French doors, illuminating white-washed stone walls. The open plan kitchen, living and dining area opens onto a balcony with a lovely view down a winding pedestrian street lined with colorful buildings and flower-filled balconies, and beyond is the beautiful blue sea. Le Balcon is decorated in an artsy, eclectic style. White-washed walls are covered in colorful art, creating the feeling that you are living in a gallery or an artist’s studio. Antique furniture is mixed with modern 60’s style pieces. The living room comfortably seats six, with a sofa bed for an extra guest and two side tables with good reading light. There is flat screen TV with DVD player as well as CD player stereo. All of the lights are on dimmer switches to allow you to create just the right mood. The balcony, with a view of the charming pedestrian street and the sea, is a wonderful place to enjoy your morning coffee or to dine al fresco — or just to sit and watch the village life unfold below. Baked in sun most of the day, the balcony has a lovely white Carrera marble floor and wrought iron railings, accented with pots of colorful flowers and herbs. The kitchen features a gas cook top, electric oven and grill, dishwasher, and granite counter tops. The bedroom has a queen-sized bed with lovely linens, two night stands with good reading light, and a closet. The bathroom is located just off the bedroom, with a walk-in shower and excellent lighting. A separate small office with a beautiful built-in desk, DSL and phone line is just the spot to set up your laptop, though internet access is wireless so you can work wherever you like. There is a large storage closet for luggage, and a laundry closet with a washing machine. The apartment has central air conditioning if you like, but the sea breeze is delightful with the French doors open. Le Balcon is located in the same building as La Cloche and can be rented together for larger groups. There is no need for a car here and we don't recommend one, especially in summer. There is train service all along the coast, allowing you to visit places like Monaco and St. Tropez without having to navigate or park, and you can easily connect to the TGV or to Eurostar trains throughout France. We can help you make arrangements to rent a car for a day or two, if you like, or for a taxi service to meet you at the airport and deliver you and your luggage right to your door. But don't say we didn't warn you — after spending a week in Le Balcon, you may never want to go home! |
