TWO WEEKS IN BARCELONA

 

 

Day 1: Saturday
Welcome to your Spanish home! Unpack, unwind and get settled. Explore your local village to find grocery shops, restaurants and the nearest coffee shop.

Day 2: Sunday
Visit the Cathedral in the old city, the Palau Reial Major, the Picasso Museum. Take a walking tour of the Gothic Quarter (Barri Gotic). Have lunch at Textil Café, Carrer Montcada 12. Tour the Textile Museum. Stop to see the Santa Maria del Mar church, one of the best preserved Gothic monuments in the city. Visit the Bridge of Sighs. Walk by the Roman walls near La Seu Cathedral. Dine at Portoles Restaurant, Diputació 375. (Remember, dinner does not begin before 8:30 p.m.)

Day 3: Monday
The Ramblas begins at the Placa Catalunya. Take the elevator to the top of the Mirador de Colon, with a stature of Christopher Colombus on top, for a spectacular view of Barcelona. Stop for Italian ice cream at Farggi Tub's & Ice Cream, Plaça de Catalunua 19. Explore La Boqueria, officially known as Mercat Sant Josep. It is one of the most spectacular food markets in Europe. Els Encants, a traditional flea market, is on Plaça de les Glòries Catalanes. They sell clothes and jewelry on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Visit the Gran Theatre de Liceu. Have a coffee by the Placa de la Boqueria, where Miro has a mosaic pavement in the square. Tour the Palau de la Musica Catalana and get tickets to a show. Dine at Cafe Alfonso, Roger de Luria 6.

Day 4: Tuesday
The Sagrada Familia is Gaudi's masterpiece. Visit the oldest synagogue in Europe. Shlomo Ben Adret. Stop for coffee in the Parc de la Ciutadella. Dine at Senyoy Parallada, C/Argenteria, 37.

Day 5: Wednesday
Gaudi created some delightful and amusing buildings. Begin at La Pedrera, the Casa Mila, Casa Batllo, Casa Terrades, and then relax in the Parc Guell. Spend the afternoon shopping in the Corte Ingles, Spain's largest department store.

Day 6: Thursday
Poble Espanyol, a "village" containing replicas of buildings of most of Spain's regions. Book Flamenco for an evening. Explore Montjuic. On the way, stop at the Magic Fountain. The Fundacio Joan Miro is a museum that welcomes children.

Day 7: Friday
Train to Sitges to relax on the beach. Dine at Restaurant Mediterran-ni, C/Major 80.

Day 8: Saturday
Free day to relax and go back to favorite places. Go to a tapas bar: Xaloc, Barri Gothic, or Sagardi, Ribera. Take a boat tour on the Golondrinas or to Tibidabo, Barcelona's amusement park.

Day 9: Sunday
Walk the "Carretera de Aiguas," walking trails behind the mountains outside of the city. The paths have continuous views of Barcelona. Dine at Pla. Montcada, 2.

Day 10: Monday
Spend the day in Girona. Wind through the narrow medieval streets. Visit the Banys Arabs (Arab baths). Explore the Jewish quarter. See the Cathedral, which has the world's widest nave. Wander over to the Museu d'Art. Lunch at El Celler de Can Roca.

Day 11: Tuesday
Visit the Cava region, Codorniu and Freixenet. Eat in a tapas bar.

Day 12: Wednesday
Spend the day in Barcelona. See the zoo and La Barceloneta. Dine at the famous fish restaurant Agua, Passeig Maritim de la Barceloneta 30.

Day 13: Thursday
Train to Montserrat, the monastery where you can visit the shrine of the Black Virgin of Montserrat.

Day 14: Friday
Relax, pack and plan an evening sitting in a plaza and dining at Origin, Pg. Del Born, 4.

Day 15: Saturday
Reflect on all you have seen and done. Get ready for the next adventure.
